"body": "The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has cautioned an increase in humidity during the night and on Tuesday morning, over some coastal areas. Picture for illustrative purposes. Picture credit: Unsplash\n\nDubai: Prepare for foggy mornings in the coming week, starting today, as temperatures remain high and humidity climbs.\n\nAccording to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the weather will be fair to partly cloudy at times, with a probability of some convective cloud formation eastward by afternoon that may be associated with rainfall.\n\nThe NCM also forecasts humidity by night and Tuesday morning over some western coastal areas, with a probability of fog or mist formation. The authorities urge motorists to be cautious when driving in the early morning hours, as you may face reduced visibility in such conditions.\n\nMid-40 temperatures\n\nTemperatures remain high today, across the UAE.\n\nThe NCM forecasts coastal and island regions to experience highs between 40°C and 45°C, while internal regions will be warmer, at 44°C to 49°C.\n\nAbu Dhabi will peak at 44°C today, while Dubai will reach 43°C. Sharjah and Ajman are seeing highs of 42°C, while Fujairah will be slightly cooler at 35°C. Al Ain and Liwa will experience the highest temperatures in the country, at 47°C and 48°C respectively.\n\nCalm seas ahead\n\nYou can expect light to moderate winds, freshening at times, today, as well as calm seas.

"body": "The UAE has accused Iran of attacking three ADNOC-linked vessels; Tehran has disputed or rejected accusations surrounding the attacks. The developments have increased concern over the security of one of the world's most important energy corridors.\n\nTrump's 60-day deadline has expired: A temporary US-Iran arrangement intended to prevent a return to full-scale fighting reached its deadline on Monday (Aug). 17, but there was no clear breakthrough between Washington and Tehran.\n\nUS and Iran remain at odds over sanctions, Iran's nuclear programme, Hormuz reopening and the US naval blockade.\n\nCeasefire extension: There had been reports that Washington and Tehran had agreed in principle to extend the arrangement, but the duration and conditions of any extension remained unresolved.\n\nDiplomatic framework under strain: The expiry of the deadline does not automatically mean that a new major US-Iran military offensive has begun. It does, however, leave the diplomatic route under significant strain, raising uncertainty.\n\nNew regional defence bloc adds another layer: A major shift in regional security has emerged after Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on Aug. 7. The pact has been described as a significant new security arrangement in the region, which US President Donald Trump labelled as a \"big, bold\" development.\n\nSaudi Jazan residents were put on alert: The regional security picture also remains fluid beyond Hormuz. Saudi Arabia's Civil Defence issued an emergency warning for residents of Jazan after the National Early Warning Platform detected a potential threat. Residents were instructed to move to safe locations and follow official directions.\n\nUS envoy Jared Kushner met Hamas leaders in Egypt on Sunday in an effort to advance President Trump's Gaza peace plan. The discussions came ahead of a planned meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.",

"title": "Educators in UAE address student concerns around A-level results",
"body": "Some parents took to social media to describe the results as 'unjustifiably strict', while many educators welcomed the outcomes and praised their students' efforts\n\nAs thousands of students across the UAE received their A-Level results last week by way of a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) system, educators have praised the process as robust and fair and reassured parents that it was the best possible way to assess students given the circumstances.\n\nIn April this year, Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel, and OxfordAQA cancelled all IGCSE and A-level examinations in the UAE for the May/June 2026 series due to the safety concerns amidst the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict.\n\nInstead of sitting formal exams, thousands of students were assessed through a PoE - a collection of coursework, internal assessments, and work completed throughout the academic year.\n\nStay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp channels.\n\nFatima Martin, principal of GEMS New Millennium School, Al Khail, said that the PoE results for AS and A-level students have been both fair and reflective of students' demonstrated performance over time.\n\n\"In our experience, for many students, the grades awarded have closely aligned with the predicted, providing reassurance and confidence in the process,\" she said. She also praised Cambridge International Education's approach, noting that \"CAIE recognised the unprecedented circumstances facing schools across the Middle East, particularly in the UAE, and responded with a robust and well-structured assessment model.\"\n\nParents, students react\n\nHowever, some parents took to social media platforms to decry what some described as \"shocking\" and \"unjustifiably strict\". \"My child received a shocking grade in a subject in which she has got the highest grades throughout the year,\" said one parent. \"We will be sending the paper for re-evaluation to the Cambridge board.\"\n\nFor many students, the PoE process was a gruelling test of endurance, even if the final outcome was positive. \"I don't feel like the portfolio of evidence gave a fair chance at a good grade, as, in order to collect the evidence, we ended up putting twice the amount of effort in half the time,\" said one student, who achieved grades of A*A and B, falling below her predicted A*A*A. The student, who sat her Cambridge board exams, added, \"On top of that, we had no clarity on how the board was marking our evidence, and we still don't. I truly believe scores would have been better if we actually sat the papers.\"\n\nAnother student who studies in a Dubai school directed his frustration at the Cambridge board, which he felt was \"very strict\". He contrasted it with Pearson Edexcel, which he believed offered a \"justified\" option by using \"enhanced grading\" based on previously sat exams. \"I think the Pearson and Edexcel boards gave the option to use enhanced grading which based the students' grades off of the exams they'd already given,\" he said. \"It was much more justified given the condition. I feel like the Cambridge board has been very strict, and it felt very unfair to us.\"\n\nPositive outlook\n\nAcross the board, school leaders maintained a far more positive outlook. Andy Kai Fong, Secondary Principal at GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis, expressed delight with his students' outcomes. \"The portfolios of evidence were accurate reflections and have been reflected in the results outcome that the students have got,\" he said. \"From that point of view, in an unusual year, we're delighted with the outcomes for our kids.\"\n\nFong also highlighted the immense emotional toll on students and families. \"I think the thing that goes perhaps unnoticed is the level of stress and tension and upheaval and change that these families and these kids have experienced through no fault of their own,\" he said. \"But having to experience that, and obviously, they went through Covid a few years ago. It has been a really turbulent ride for them. So, anything that they have achieved, it is a really fantastic acknowledgement of all of them and the efforts that they do.\"\n\nExtraordinary effort\n\nSheridan Teasel, Head of Secondary at Dubai British School Emirates Hills, shared confidence in the process, noting that the evidence was completed \"under formal examination conditions and replicated real A-level papers\". However, he acknowledged a significant challenge: \"The incredible amount of work that was unexpectedly transferred to teachers, which would normally have been carried out by the examination boards.\"\n\nRebecca Coulter from Dubai British School, Jumeirah Park, added that \"the approach provided a more condensed assessment period, with students completing a more intense schedule of shorter assessments alongside their coursework and other evidence\".\n\nMike Davies, Vice Principal - Quality Assurance, International Collaboration and Innovation at Safa Community School, painted a vivid picture of the extraordinary effort required to make the PoE system work.\n\n\"Behind the results is a remarkable collaborative effort involving students, teachers, heads of department and senior leaders, with more than 7,000 pieces of evidence collated, quality-assured, and electronically submitted to examination and awarding bodies,\" he said.\n\n\"Staff and students worked tirelessly both in school and remotely to complete portfolios, coursework, practical assessments and supplementary evidence. The school even operated a 24-hour evidence drop-off facility, ensuring that students were not disadvantaged by logistical challenges and that every opportunity was taken to showcase their knowledge, skills and achievements.\"\n\nEmotional toll on students\n\nDespite the reassurances from school leadership, the emotional and psychological toll on students was undeniable. One student captured this perfectly. \"I'm annoyed that I didn't get to sit my A-Levels,\" she said. \"I'm relieved that it's all over and that it worked out for me, but I'm frustrated for my friends who scored much lower than they deserved.\"\n\nWhile many students met their university conditions, she noted that \"a couple people are in the process of negotiating with their universities to see if they can still be let in even though they haven't met their conditions, and then some are going to their backup universities.\"\n\nThis highlights a fundamental anxiety: that universities, despite reassurances, might not view PoE grades with the same weight as traditional A-Levels. What is clear is that the students, teachers, and school leaders who navigated this unprecedented process deserve recognition for their resilience.",

"title": "UAE experts warn physical punishment can affect children's learning, emotional wellbeing",
"body": "Fear-based discipline can affect children's emotional regulation, confidence and ability to learn\n\nChildren who experience physical punishment may be more likely to struggle academically and engage in risky behaviour as teenagers, according to a new University College London (UCL) study. Psychologists in UAE have warned that punishment such as smacking or slaps can also affect children's emotional regulation, confidence and relationships.\n\nThe research examined data from around 19,000 children born in the UK between 2000 and 2002, including information on physical punishment at ages three, five and seven. Among children in England whose records were linked to the National Pupil Database, those who experienced physical punishment at all three ages were 5.7 percentage points more likely not to achieve five GCSE grades from A* to C, including English and maths, than those who had not experienced physical punishment.\n\nThe study also found that 14-year-olds who had experienced physical punishment in early childhood were 33 per cent more likely to engage in risky behaviours towards others, including hitting, pushing, shoving and bullying.\n\nStay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp channels.\n\nHowever, the researchers stressed that the study is observational and shows an association rather than proving that physical punishment directly caused poorer grades or risky behaviour.\n\nUAE psychologists said the findings are consistent with concerns around how fear and physical punishment can affect the way children learn, manage emotions and respond to conflict.\n\nDr Sneha John, a licensed psychologist at Medcare Camali Clinic Jumeirah, said children generally learn best when they feel safe and secure.\n\n\"When a child is worried about being hit or punished for making a mistake, their attention can shift from 'What can I learn from this?' to 'How do I avoid getting into trouble?'\" she said.\n\nRepeated physical punishment can contribute to fear, anxiety and difficulties with emotional regulation, she added, potentially affecting concentration, confidence and motivation.\n\n\"A child who is afraid of getting something wrong may stop asking questions, avoid difficult tasks or give up quickly,\" she said.\n\nDr John also said the findings around risky behaviour highlight the importance of what adults model for children.\n\n\"Children learn far more from what we model than from what we tell them,\" she said. \"If we tell a child, 'You must not hit', but then use hitting when we are frustrated with their behaviour, that can be a very confusing message.\"\n\nShe stressed that this does not mean children who experience physical punishment will automatically become aggressive or engage in bullying, but said it can influence how they understand conflict and authority.\n\n\"They need to learn to say, 'I am angry', 'I need some space', 'I don't like what you did' or 'I need help', rather than expressing difficult emotions through aggression,\" she said.\n\nHiba Badawi, a psychologist, said physical punishment may also interfere with processes that are important for learning.\n\n\"Physical punishment raises cortisol levels in children and, unfortunately, this is closely related to learning,\" she said. \"With repeated physical punishment, working memory can be affected. Working memory is responsible for learning, attention, problem-solving, decision-making and processing information, which can ultimately reduce a child's ability to learn.\"Dr Amal Salem Basohaib, an internationally certified coach in family and social relations, said physical punishment can affect the psychological environment in which a child learns.\n\n\"When a child feels fear or threat, their focus is on protecting themselves and avoiding punishment rather than learning, exploring and asking questions,\" she said.\n\nHowever, Basohaib stressed that the UCL study should not be interpreted as proof that physical punishment directly causes lower academic achievement.\n\nBadawi also pointed to modeling, saying children can learn ways of handling conflict by observing the adults around them.\n\n\"A child who learns to solve problems through physical punishment may become accustomed to using the same approach in conflicts with peers and may continue using it as they grow older,\" she said.\n\nRepeated physical punishment can also affect the parent-child relationship and a child's self-esteem, she added, potentially contributing to anxiety and social anxiety.\n\nDr Amal Salem Basohaib, an internationally certified coach in family and social relations, said physical punishment can affect the psychological environment in which a child learns.\n\n\"When a child feels fear or threat, their focus is on protecting themselves and avoiding punishment rather than learning, exploring and asking questions,\" she said.\n\nHowever, Basohaib stressed that the UCL study should not be interpreted as proof that physical punishment directly causes lower academic achievement.\n\n\"Academic achievement is affected by many factors, including the family environment, socioeconomic circumstances, mental health, quality of education and the relationship between parents and children,\" she said.\n\nShe said the findings nevertheless provide an important indicator for parents and educators to consider.\n\nBasohaib also said children learn how to manage disagreements partly by observing how adults respond to conflict.\n\n\"If the message a child receives is that physical force is a way to stop unwanted behaviour, they may learn, directly or indirectly, that force is one way of resolving conflict,\" she said.\n\nFor UAE parents dealing with challenging behaviour, the experts stressed that moving away from physical punishment does not mean abandoning discipline.\n\nDr John recommended setting clear and consistent boundaries and using consequences that are proportionate, predictable and connected to the behaviour. For older children and teenagers, this could include temporarily limiting a privilege, while also encouraging them to repair any harm they have caused and rebuild trust.\n\nBadawi recommended establishing clear rules, using age-appropriate consequences such as temporarily restricting access to a favourite device or game, modelling positive behaviour and reinforcing good behaviour rather than focusing only on mistakes.\n\nBasohaib suggested giving children limited choices, using logical consequences, praising positive behaviour and helping children recognise and regulate difficult emotions.\n\n\"Discipline does not mean cruelty, and compassion does not mean permissiveness,\" she said. \"The child needs boundaries, but those boundaries can be clear and firm without using violence.\"\n\n\"The goal of parenting is not for the child to be afraid of their parents, but to learn from them how to be responsible, regulate themselves and make the right decision even when the parents are not present,\" she said.\n\nDr John said parents should also consider what children learn from punishment, rather than focusing only on whether it stops a behaviour in the moment.\n\n\"Physical punishment may sometimes stop behaviour immediately because the child is frightened of the consequence. But stopping a behaviour is very different from teaching a child how to manage it,\" she said.",
