"body": "A VIDEO showing a group of secondary school students attacking a fellow student outside a school in Taman Desaminium, Serdang, went viral on social media, drawing widespread outrage.\n\nBut the footage showed something beyond the usual school fight: when the victim's father stepped in to break it up, he was attacked too.\n\nWas a father beaten up after trying to stop a group of students from attacking his son?\n\nVerdict:\n\nTRUE\n\nSerdang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad said police received a report on the incident after the video went viral on social media.\n\nThe incident occurred at around 12.45pm on July 3 when the 16-year-old victim was walking towards his motorcycle parked outside the school grounds.\n\n\"The student was then called over by several male students from the same school before being surrounded and beaten by all of the suspects.\n\n\"As a result of the incident, the victim sustained injuries including cuts to his lip and knee, bruising and pain throughout his body,\" said Muhamad Farid in a statement on Friday (July 24).\n\nThe victim's father, who attempted to break up the fight, was also attacked and knocked to the ground.\n\n\"As a result of the incident, the victim's father sustained injuries to his hands and legs, as well as pain throughout his body,\" he said.\n\nSeveral individuals have been detained and were to be brought to the Petaling Jaya Magistrates' Court on Friday for a remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.\n\nA police investigation has been opened under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.\n\nThe case is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.\n\nMuhamad Farid said police were working with the school and parents to ensure the case was handled professionally and in accordance with the law.\n\nHe advised the public not to speculate in a way that could interfere with the investigation.\n\nAnyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Serdang district police headquarters at 03-8074 2222 or the nearest police station.",

As a result, the lineup of smartphones has been the subject of a few leaks, typically discussing their expected specifications. Now, leaked images of the alleged family have surfaced online. Not only do these images reveal three smartphone prototypes, which are believed to be the upcoming flagship series, but they also appear to feature significantly different designs from their predecessors.\n\nAccording to Gizmochina, the three devices are believed to be the rumoured Find X10, Find X10 Pro, and Find X10 Pro Max. The images show the trio mounted on a testing rig alongside the iPhone 17 Pro, presumably to test their cameras against the Apple flagship.\n\nAccording to well-known tipster Digital Chat Station, the leaked devices are Engineering Verification Test (EVT) units of the alleged OPPO Find X10 series. The publication also notes that there is still uncertainty surrounding the alleged Find X10 Ultra, with the Find X10 Pro Max potentially serving as the lineup's highest-end model.\n\nIt adds that, if the Find X10 Ultra is indeed absent, the move could reflect a broader trend of smartphone brands streamlining their product portfolios amid rising memory costs. "body": "China's global image has rebounded from its pandemic-era lows, with international views of both the country and President Xi Jinping improving as confidence in the United States has declined, according to a new Pew Research Centre survey.\n\nThe survey, released on Wednesday, polled more than 45,000 people across 37 countries spanning every region of the world, including many advanced economies and emerging markets, such as Argentina, Australia, France, Ghana, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and the US.\n\n\"Views of China were at or near historic lows in many countries during the Covid-19 pandemic but have since steadily increased,\" Jonathan Schulman, a research associate at Pew Research Centre, said in a statement to the South China Morning Post.\n\n\"Views of the US have declined in many places, and the share of people saying that the US is a reliable partner to their country has similarly fallen sharply.\"\n\nThe survey was conducted between February and May through telephone, face-to-face and online interviews, during a period when the US was becoming increasingly entangled in the conflict with Iran and other regional crises.\n\nOne of the survey's most notable findings is the shift in relative perceptions of China and the US.\n\nAcross the 20 countries that Pew has surveyed consistently over time, all of which were included in this year's 37-country survey, China now enjoys a higher average favourability rating than the US, with 46 per cent of respondents expressing a favourable view of China, compared with 36 per cent for the US.\n\nIn 2023, the US enjoyed a much more favourable image, with 54 per cent of respondents viewing it more positively than China, while only 19 per cent favoured China.\n\n\"I was not surprised,\" Zack Cooper, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said. \"The view internationally has become far more negative about the United States in the last year or two.\"\n\nCooper said China's political stability under Xi has contributed to perceptions of consistency, while leadership changes in Western democracies often produce shifts in foreign policy.\n\nEven in the US, where China is increasingly viewed as a geopolitical competitor, 27 per cent of respondents expressed a favourable view of the country, up from the lows recorded during the pandemic.\n\nConfidence in Xi to do the right thing regarding world affairs has also risen in many countries, although opinions of the Chinese leader remain more negative than positive in most of the wealthier nations surveyed.\n\nPew has decades of work history studying views of the US and China and their political leaders.\n\nThe survey found that favourable views of China are strongest across much of Latin America, Africa and parts of South and Southeast Asia, while attitudes remain considerably less positive in Europe and advanced East Asian economies.\n\nCooper said many developing countries place greater weight on China's economic opportunities than on concerns over political freedoms or human rights.\n\nDespite the improvement in China's overall image, many respondents continued to express concern about the Chinese government's respect for personal freedoms.\n\nYounger adults, however, were more likely than older respondents to believe China respects individual freedoms.\n\nIn Britain, for example, 30 per cent of adults under 35 agreed with that statement, compared with 13 per cent of those aged 50 and older.\n\nThe survey also found a decline over the past five years in the share of respondents who believe the US government respects the personal freedoms of its own citizens.\n\nIsrael showed the largest gap in perceptions between the two countries, with respondents expressing among the strongest support for the US and among the least favourable views of China. "body": "MUMBAI, July 24 (Reuters) - Indian banks and insurers will launch a common customer identification system in August, with asset managers joining later, two regulatory sources and industry executives said, allowing customers to access financial products without separatelysubmitting identification documents.\n\nThe new system, known as Central Know-Your-Customer 2.0 (CKYC), will only require the customer's consent for these institutions to fetch data stored at a central registry when opening an account or updating their details.\n\nIndia has spent more than a decade trying to create a system similar to those in countries such as Singapore and several European nations, where digital identity frameworks allow customers to access multiple financial products through a common verification process.\n\nIt will also help combat fraud through easier monitoring, the regulatory sources said.\n\nCapital markets firms, including mutual funds and brokerages, are expected to be able to use it later this year as regulators work through sector-specific requirements, they said.\n\nThe sources declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to the media. The Reserve Bank of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the insurance regulator, all of whom are jointly executing the project, did not answer Reuters emails immediately.\n\nThe move comes as India seeks to deepen participation in financial products after having largely achieved basic financial inclusion.\n\nAbout 89% of adults owned bank accounts in 2024, as per World Bank data, but ownership in mutual funds, insurance and pensions remains comparatively low, regulatory data showed.\n\nWHAT'S CHANGING\n\nWhile India already has a central registry containing about 1.2 billion customer records, it is not widely used due to concerns about the quality of data, with duplication and missing details.\n\nWith the RBI not accepting records sourced from the registry, investors had to file the same documents to access other financial products.\n\nIn the new system, records will carry a confidence score on the accuracy of data and will say whether a firm has verified the information.\n\nFinancial institutions would then need to seek customers' consent through a one-time password to access these verified records, according to the operating guidelines document seen by Reuters.\n\nDP Singh, joint chief executive of SBI Funds Management, India's largest asset manager, said, CKYC could substantially expand the industry's investor base.\n\nThe fund house's largest shareholder and the country's largest bank by assets, State Bank of India, for instance, has 500 million bank accounts.\n\n\"Even if a fraction of eligible customers begin investing after universal customer identification, the upside will be significant,\" Singh said, adding that the framework could be rolled out for the industry within four months.\n\nParas Pasricha, business head, Policybazaar, India's largest insurance marketplace, said records can be updated in near real-time.\n\n\"Insurance companies are in the process of building capabilities, and we are expecting something to come up by the end of July, and in August some phase of it should go live,\" he said.\n\n(Reporting by Jayshree P Upadhyay and Ashwin Manikandan; Editing by Harikrishnan Nair)",
