"body": "SEREMBAN: A Form 4 student has died after she is believed to have fallen from the third floor of a secondary school in Sendayan on Friday (June 19).\n\nNegri Sembilan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said police were alerted to the incident at about 10.50am and a team was immediately dispatched to the school.\n\n\"We were informed that a 16-year-old student had been found unconscious within the school compound.\n\n\"When my men arrived, the student was pronounced dead,\" he said in a statement.\n\nDCP Alzafny said police had identified several individuals who could assist in the investigation.\n\nThe victim's body was sent to Rembau Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.\n\nPolice have classified the case as sudden death pending further investigations.\n\n\"We will record statements from eyewitnesses and obtain the autopsy report to establish the cause of death.\n\n\"I hope the public will refrain from speculating or sharing unverified information, as this could jeopardise investigations,\" he said.\n\nHe also urged anyone with information on the case to contact the district police headquarters or the nearest police station.\n\nThe state Education Department, in a statement, expressed sadness over the incident.\n\n\"The police are investigating the incident and we, together with the relevant parties, are providing full cooperation to the ongoing probe,\" it said.\n\nThe department said it had also initiated an internal investigation into the matter.\n\nIt said its priority was to provide the best possible assistance to the family and extend psychosocial support to all affected members of the school community.\n\n\"We request all parties to give space and respect the sensitivities of the family, who are currently going through a difficult time,\" it added.",

"body": "SINGAPORE: A man who had \"uncontrolled sexual habits\" was ordered on June 3 to undergo reformative training for at least a year after raping two girls, aged 13 and 14.\n\nThe offender, 20, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and one count of possessing intimate images of a third victim, who is his 17-year-old female cousin.\n\nThe man cannot be named as that could lead to the identification of his cousin.\n\nDuring reformative training, young offenders are detained in a centre to undergo a strict regimen that can include foot drills and counselling.\n\nDeputy public prosecutors Jordon Li and Jeremy Bin said that in mid-2023, the offender met the first victim on Omegle, an online platform where users are paired with strangers to chat.\n\nOmegle was shut down in November 2023 amid multiple lawsuits accusing the platform of facilitating the sexual exploitation and grooming of minors.\n\nThe first victim was 13 and in Secondary 1 at the time. Despite knowing her age, and being aware that having sex with her would be illegal, the offender got her to send him nude videos and hatched a plan to have sex with her.\n\nIn June 2023, they arranged to meet up for sex, and the offender brought along three sex toys.\n\nThey went to Nex in Serangoon where they bought lingerie for her. After lunch, they headed to a Housing Board block near the victim's home and had sex at a staircase landing.\n\nThe offender also met the second victim, who was 14 at the time, on Omegle. Despite knowing her age, he suggested they have sex.\n\nIn February 2023, they met at Causeway Point and took a bus to a nearby HDB block and had sex at a staircase landing there.\n\nIn July 2023, the first victim's mother filed a police report saying her daughter had been raped. It was not mentioned in court documents how her mother found out.\n\nPolice later seized the offender's mobile phone and discovered that he had two intimate photos of his female cousin on it.\n\nInvestigations revealed that the offender had taken photos of his cousin when they were on a trip in South Korea with her parents in February 2023.\n\nDuring the trip, the offender shared a room with his cousin. They were close and would sometimes change in front of each other.\n\nThe offender told police he took the photos for his own gratification and did not share them with anyone.\n\nIn the grounds of decision dated June 12, District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan said that while there was no evidence of force or coercion of the two girls the offender met, they were vulnerable due to their ages.\n\nThe judge added that there was some degree of exploitation of their youth.\n\nHe added that the reformative training report presented the offender as someone who exhibited \"entrenched pro-criminal attitudes\", and noted that the offender had watched pornographic materials online since he was seven and had sexual interactions with multiple partners.\n\n\"These uncontrolled sexual habits contributed to his offending behaviour,\" added Shaiffudin.\n\nHe said the offender's family were previously unaware of his sexual habits but are now supportive of his motivation to make amends.\n\nIn coming to his decision on sentencing the offender to reformative training, the judge said: \"He had come clean and accepted full responsibility.\n\n\"He did not minimise his culpability or make any attempt to shift the blame on the victims.\n\n\"He expressed motivation and willingness to work on his areas of need. "body": "TUBARA/JUAN DE ACOSTA, COLOMBIA, June 19 (Reuters) - At first glance, these neighboring municipalities set along Colombia's sweltering Caribbean coast have much in common. Single-story homes with outdoor rocking chairs cluster around town squares and residents time their outings to avoid the midday heat. Mango trees line streets where schoolchildren dawdle home.\n\nBut Tubara and Juan de Acosta, both near port city Barranquilla, diverge sharply when it comes to Sunday's presidential election, which pits conflicting visions for Colombia's future against one another.\n\nIn Juan de Acosta, where murders and extortion have spiked as drug trafficking increased along its coastline, right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella got 55% support in the first round. He has pledged to bring the hammer down on armed groups and criminal gangs.\n\nNext door, Tubara backed leftist senator Ivan Cepeda with just under 60% of their votes. His socially focused message resonated there, with promises to expand reforms to healthcare, pensions and education.\n\nDe La Espriella, 47, a lawyer and businessman with no prior political experience, has deployed military-style visuals and rhetoric. He refers to himself as \"the Tiger,\" calls his political movement \"Defenders of the Homeland,\" and salutes at rallies and in publicity, despite never having served in the military.\n\nHis pledge to crack down on crime gave him a lead of several points over Cepeda in the first round and recent polling has him eight points ahead for the second.\n\nThe spike in murders and extortion is out of character for Juan de Acosta, said Nicanor Alba, as he chopped and bagged pork ribs for customers at his butcher stand near the town's plaza.\n\n\"You set up your business and tomorrow they come and say 'if you don't give us 50,000, 30,000 or 40,000 (pesos), it's over,'\" said Alba, whose own brother was murdered five years ago.\n\nHe said several friends and neighbors have fallen victim repeatedly to extortion. He said he was shocked by recent homicide figures.\n\n\"That had never been seen before in Juan de Acosta, it's a bunch of people,\" said the butcher, who plans to vote for De La Espriella.\n\nDRUG TRAFFICKING\n\nJuan de Acosta's road connections to the interior of the country combined with its coastline have made it a \"strategic point\" for drug traffickers, said Colonel Eddy Sanchez, police commander for Atlantico province.\n\nTwo criminal groups -- Los Pepes and Los Costenos -- ave historically operated in the municipality, including selling drugs, Sanchez said. Recently the country's largest crime gang, the Clan del Golfo, has arrived as well.\n\n\"The Clan del Golfo uses this municipality as a platform to reach maritime areas and, using speedboats, ship drugs abroad,\" Sanchez said.\n\n\"Of course, that leads to issues of violence,\" he added, though he said murders have fallen from 15 in 2025 to just 2 in 2026 so far, the municipality's historic average. Police have classed 14 of last year's murders as contract killings.\n\nTubara, by contrast, had no murders in 2025 and has recorded only one so far in 2026, Sanchez said.\n\n\"It's a territorial dispute, where some gangs are trying to enter the municipality while others are trying to push them out to fully control local drug trafficking,\" said Oscar Andres Arteta, Juan de Acosta's interior secretary, adding local government and police are working together to fight extortion.\n\nJuan Gabriel Coronel, who sells meat, ice cream and dry goods at a small store in Juan de Acosta, plans to vote for De La Espriella in the hopes he can curb violence and extortion. But he also wants a change for his health.\n\n\"I had a liver transplant 17 years ago and have never been denied my medication in that time,\" said the 42-year-old, a client of a healthcare provider which the government took over in 2024 because of alleged care failures. For the last six months, Coronel said, he has had to pay for the medication out of pocket.\n\nGET OUT THE VOTE\n\nIn a field of 13 candidates, Cepeda, 63, the son of a murdered communist leader, won all but one Caribbean province in the first round.\n\nHe needs to increase his numbers there and in capital Bogota to have a shot at winning the run-off, said Luis Fernando Trejos, a politics professor at the Universidad del Norte.\n\nThe leftist will need 2.5 million to 3 million additional votes to win, he added. De La Espriella, who had about 700,000 more votes than Cepeda in the first round, will also need to increase his voter share. More than 41 million Colombians are eligible to vote but just under 24 million participated in the first round.\n\nBoth candidates have secured backing from various political powerbrokers on the coast, Trejos said.\n\nDe La Espriella has taken pains to emphasize that he was raised in the inland Caribbean city of Monteria. His campaign billboards feature his tiger alter ego dressed in a Barranquilla soccer jersey and read \"Abelardo is coastal like you. .... Coastal votes coastal.\"\n\nHe has also accused Cepeda of planning a massive vote-buying operation on the coast, which Cepeda's campaign has vehemently denied.\n\nCepeda voters in Tubara have been working to increase turnout.\n\nClara Algarin, a clinical psychologist and former city councilor, has been arranging transport for voters who could not reach polling stations for the first round, she told Reuters.\n\nAlgarin admires current leftist President Gustavo Petro's expansion of free public university for undergraduates and the 230,000 peso ($66) per month state pension he instituted for people who were unable to save for retirement, including her own mother.\n\n\"My mother worked as a domestic servant from the age of 16. She never had the possibility of being paid a pension before,\" said Algarin.\n\nHer husband Javier Gomez runs a bakery, on whose porch hangs a bright Cepeda banner. "body": "COLOMBO, June 19 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka is battling the worst outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever in years, with more than 44,000 cases and 28 deaths recorded since January, an official said on Friday, putting public hospitals under strain.\n\nDengue is common during Sri Lanka's monsoon season, but unplanned urbanisation coupled with damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which hit the island nation in late November, has worsened the outbreak this year, authorities said.\n\nThe number of dengue cases nearly doubled from 5,651 in April to 10,638 in the first two weeks of June, data from the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) showed.\n\n\"We noticed this increase after the cyclone,\" Dr. Prashila Samaraweera, consultant community physician and NDCU spokesperson, told Reuters.\n\n\"A lot of debris was in our environment, so we noticed a lot of mosquito breeding places, and our entomological indices were high from that time.\"\n\nWith 51,000 cases recorded in the whole of last year, the rate of infections has risen sharply, Dr. Samaraweera said. Infections are likely to increase for at least two more weeks before tapering off, she added.\n\nSURGE COULD PUT HEALTH FACILITIES UNDER SEVERE STRAIN\n\nA further uptick in patient numbers could put public hospitals under severe strain, Sri Lanka's health minister Nalinda Jayatissa warned on Thursday.\n\nMore than half the cases are from the western region of the country, including 9,429 cases from commercial capital Colombo. T&Cs apply.\n\nKUALA LUMPUR, June 19 -- The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar on Friday as persistent expectations of a possible US Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate hike later this year continued to drive the greenback.\n\nAt 6 pm, the local note fell to 4.1340/1395 against the greenback from 4.1145/1195 at Thursday's close.\n\nBank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the prospect of higher US interest rates supported the greenback, exerting pressure on Asian currencies, including the ringgit.\n\n\"(Asian) currency markets continued to suffer from fears of monetary tightening by the Fed, where it is expected to increase the federal funds rate by 25 basis points this year,\" he told Bernama.\n\nAt the close, the ringgit was lower against a basket of major currencies.\n\nIt dipped against the Japanese yen to 2.5636/5671 from 2.5588/5620 at Thursday's close and weakened against the British pound to 5.4709/4782 from 5.4476/4542 previously. It also slipped versus the euro to 4.7376/7439 from 4.7222/7280.\n\nThe local note was also lower against regional currencies.\n\nIt weakened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2019/2064 from 3.1898/1939 and declined against the Thai baht to 12.5856/6074 from 12.5611/5809 at Thursday's close.\n\nThe ringgit also depreciated versus the Indonesian rupiah to 232.2/232.5 from 231.2/231.5 previously and eased against the Philippine peso to 6.80/6.81 from 6.79/6.80. -- Bernama",
