"title": "Psychology says the most magnetic people aren't charming or funny or successful -- they're the ones who make you feel like you can stop performing because they've visibly stopped performing themselves - Silicon Canals",
"body": "The most attractive quality has nothing to do with wit, success, or even likeability -- it's the rare permission you feel to be yourself.\n\nThink about the last party where you actually had a good time.\n\nChances are it wasn't the person with the best stories who made it good. It was the one you ended up next to in the kitchen, the one you talked to for an hour without once checking how you were coming across.\n\nYou probably couldn't tell anyone what they said. But you remember the feeling: your shoulders dropped. You said things you don't usually say. You left thinking, I like that person, without being able to explain why.\n\nHere's why. And it's simpler than charm.\n\nEveryone at the party is working\n\nStart with a fact most people never admit: nearly everyone in a room full of people is putting on a small show.\n\nNot lying, exactly. Just managing. Laughing a half-second early. Keeping the story tight. Not mentioning the rough month. Watching how the joke landed. It's low-level, constant, and tiring -- and it runs on a fear that researchers have measured: we assume other people are judging us more harshly than they actually are. In study after study, people walk away from conversations convinced they were liked less than they really were. Researchers call it the liking gap. Everyone's got one.\n\nSo picture a room where everyone is quietly running that show. Now put one person in the corner who isn't.\n\nThe person who quit first\n\nThe magnetic person isn't better at the show. They've stopped doing it -- and you can tell.\n\nThey'll say \"I have no idea, actually.\" They'll mention that the week was hard, plainly, without turning it into a bit. They'll let a silence sit. They laugh late, or not at all, and it's fine. They don't seem to be tracking how they're doing, which is the whole tell -- because tracking is the show, and they've put it down.\n\nAnd here's the thing about a room where everyone's performing: the first person to stop gives everyone else permission. Your body reads them and relaxes before your brain catches up. Oh. We can do that here. You start telling the truer version of your story. You stop watching yourself. That drop in your shoulders isn't about them being charming.\n\nIt's relief. And people are magnetized to relief.\n\nScience caught this in the 1960s\n\nThere's an old experiment that gets at this from a funny angle.\n\nIn 1966, psychologist Elliot Aronson had people listen to a recording of a very competent quiz contestant -- smart, impressive, nailed almost every question. In one version, at the end, the contestant clumsily spilled coffee all over himself. In the other, he didn't.\n\nListeners liked the coffee-spiller more. Noticeably more. The polished version was admirable but distant -- a little superhuman. The spill made him a person. (It's called the pratfall effect, and there's a catch: it only worked for the competent guy. When an average contestant spilled the coffee, people liked him less. More on that in a second.)\n\nThe lesson people take from it -- \"flaws are attractive\" -- is a bit too neat. What the coffee actually did was show that the polish wasn't a performance. Here was someone good, who also wasn't managing your impression of him. That combination is rare, and we can feel it from across a room.\n\nWhy \"just be vulnerable\" doesn't work\n\nThis is where a lot of advice goes wrong, so let's be careful.\n\nThe magnetic person isn't confessing at you. Oversharing is its own performance -- a bid for reassurance dressed up as openness -- and people can smell it. Neither is it fake modesty, or the rehearsed self-deprecating joke, or the \"I'm such a mess\" that's fishing for a no you're not. All of those are still the show. They're just a different costume.\n\nThat's the pratfall catch, too. The coffee only helped a person who'd already shown he was solid. Vulnerability lands as magnetic when it comes from someone who's clearly okay -- someone whose openness reads as I don't need to manage you, not please manage me. It's the difference between a person putting down their guard and a person handing you their guard to hold.\n\nThe genuine version has almost no effort in it. That's how you know.\n\nHow to be that person (a little)\n\nYou can't fake your way to this, but you can practice the real thing in small doses. It mostly means noticing when you're running the show and putting one piece of it down.\n\nAnswer \"how are you?\" with one true sentence before you deflect. Say \"I don't know\" without a scramble to cover it. Let one silence go by without filling it. Tell the story with the boring, unflattering middle left in. Notice you're checking how you're landing -- and, just once, don't.\n\nIt'll feel like you've dropped something. What you've actually dropped is the weight everyone in the room is carrying -- and the second they see you set it down, they'll want to set theirs down next to it.\n\nThat's the whole trick the magnetic people know. They're not more interesting than you.\n\nThey just stopped performing first -- and everyone around them has been waiting all night for someone to go first.",

"title": "Jungo accredited by watchdog AFM, wants to crowdsource your mortgage - Silicon Canals",
"body": "Beware, mortgage lenders: a new competitor is in the house. It's not a big bank or business, but the crowd itself, who can soon invest in mortgages through Jungo, an online mortgage crowdfunding platform founded by two guys with big ideas.\n\nCollaborative economy\n\nAlthough people will still need the actual bank or mortgage broker to seal the actual deal, Jungo makes it possible for everyone to invest in the mortgages through crowdfunding. This so-called people-to-people mortgage is the next step in the collaborative economy, where online platforms like AirBnB or Uber allow both the supplying and demanding side to gain (financial) advantage with the deals they make with each other.\n\nJungo aims to be that specific platform the the mortgage sector. According to co-founder Vincent van den Noort, Jungo creates a win-win situation for investors and home buyers: people are able to buy their dream house with the new group of potential investors, while the investors receive a nice return on their investment.\n\nSafety\n\nFunding from the crowd doesn't mean that people can loan more money than the bank will offer them. In other words; more money that they can actually afford. \"It's not our goal to saddle up people with higher debts,\" Van den Noort says. \"Our aim is that people can receive a more affordable mortgage in a safe and secure way.\"\n\nSafety and security are important issues when it comes to mortgages. It's good news for Jungo, then, that they received an official go-ahead this week from the AFM, the financial services regulatory authority for the Netherlands. It's a crucial moment for the startup, because the license from the AFM is necessary to make investing in mortgages possible. \"We have a complete license to offer and mediate mortgage loans,\" says Gerard Looijen, director of Jungo's Finance, Risk & Operations department.",

"title": "Eatable Adventures, others invest €15M in FoodSeed Accelerator to boost the Italian foodtech sector - Silicon Canals",
"body": "Eatable Adventures, a foodtech accelerator, has invested €15M in FoodSeed, along with CDP Venture Capital Sgr, Fondazione Cariverona, and UniCredit.\n\nMadrid-based Eatable Adventures, a foodtech accelerator, announced on Thursday that it has invested €15M in FoodSeed, the national Agrifoodtech programme in Italy, along with CDP Venture Capital Sgr, Fondazione Cariverona, and UniCredit.\n\nEatable Adventures mentions that the Italian agrifood system contributes 25 per cent to the country's GDP and has been a major factor in the expansion and advancement of the country.\n\nAs compared to other foreign markets, this market is currently under a number of stresses that call into question the industry's durability, effectiveness, and viability. Implementing new business models incorporating sustainability and technology as strategic pillars are necessary.\n\nEatable Adventures has been chosen by CDP Venture Capital's national network of accelerators to lead FoodSeed. About €12M were allocated by CDP Venture Capital, Fondazione Cariverona, and UniCredit, while an additional €3.24M came from Eatable Adventures.\n\nAim of this investment\n\nFoodSeed will use the funds to support startups during its acceleration programme and subsequent growth. Additionally, Eatable Adventures Italy will also support regional ecosystem development initiatives and open innovation projects.\n\nWith this, Eatable Adventures aims to boost the economic development and competitiveness of the Italian industry with a focus on partnerships between important participants in the agrifood value chain, such as businesses, startups, universities, and R&D facilities.\n\nJosé Luis Cabañero, founder of Eatable Adventures, says, \"The Italian food industry is undeniably a strategic market on a global scale, and its emerging ecosystem provides a fantastic opportunity to accelerate the implementation of new technologies in the sector.\"\n\n\"We are excited to take on this new challenge and build synergies with a market that has very similar characteristics to Spain's, which will undoubtedly help us structure the European agrifoodtech ecosystem,\" he adds.\n\nThe new FoodSeed programme joins Eatable Adventures' more than 10 incubation and acceleration programmes for businesses, governments, and projects developed by the accelerator itself.\n\nWhat will the FoodSeed programme offer?\n\nTo support the growth of the most innovative agrifood Italian companies, FoodSeed will join the national network of incubators of the Italian public venture capital, which already has nearly 20 verticalised programmes.\n\nIn order to strengthen Italy's innovation environments, particularly in Sustainable Agriculture, Food and Beverages, and Circular Economy, the initiative will choose 10 companies annually for three years.\n\nRiccardo Fisogni, VP and GM of Eatable Adventures Italy, has been chosen by the incubator to serve as the project's manager. Fisogni is a business angel, investment banker, and adviser with 10 years of expertise in strategic financial advice for companies and SMBs.\n\nFisogni will support the company's 2023 agenda, which outlines efforts targeted at revitalising the regional agrifood ecology through the creation of new collaboration models with international ambitions.\n\nFisogni says, \"Italy is a strategic market on the global stage, and it is now critical to accelerating the food system transition. The FoodSeed programme will power a new generation of foodtech startups in Italy, assisting in the global transition of the food system.\"\n\n\"It is an excellent opportunity for both startups and Italian agrifood companies facing significant economic and environmental challenges. Innovation is the solution to our industry's major challenges and a key driver of its competitiveness.\"\n\nAbout Eatable Adventures\n\nEatable Adventures claims to be one of the top food technology accelerators that finds, promotes and assists in expanding innovative and disruptive food businesses globally.\n\nIt has more than 40 corporate programmes each year, a community of more than 25,000 founders, and a deal flow of 3,000 foodtech projects analysed in 2022.\n\nThe firm says it is working to promote, develop, and share technologies in the agrifood sector in order to create tomorrow's food system, which will be sustainable, effective, healthy, and guarantee global food security.",

"title": "Waking up early and feeling refreshed is less a matter of willpower than of working with your body clock: research on chronotypes and on light shows that alignment and a steady schedule matter far more than heroically early alarms - Silicon Canals",
"body": "Your body's circadian rhythm -- not your willpower -- determines whether early mornings feel energizing or grueling.\n\nThe internet is full of advice to join the five o'clock club and become a morning person through sheer discipline, as though the only thing standing between you and a refreshed dawn is weakness of will. The science of sleep and circadian rhythms tells a more useful and considerably less punishing story. Whether you can wake early and feel good is mostly a matter of aligning your schedule with your body's clock and feeding that clock the right signals, not of grinding yourself awake. Get a few things right and early rising becomes sustainable. Fight your biology and it stays miserable.\n\nYou have a body clock, and a type\n\nPeople differ, partly through their genes, in whether they are naturally morning types or evening types, and this is not a matter of character. It is a chronotype, a built-in setting for when your body wants to sleep and wake. When your social schedule sits badly out of step with that setting, you get what researchers call social jetlag, a term coined by Till Roenneberg and colleagues, whose 2006 work described the tired, jet-lagged feeling of living on a timetable your body did not choose, and linked it to poorer sleep and wellbeing.\n\nThe first honest point follows from this. How early you can realistically wake and still feel refreshed depends on your type. A genuine night owl forcing themselves up at five will suffer, no matter how many productivity gurus insist otherwise. The aim is not to become a lark by decree, which mostly is not possible, but to shrink the gap between your internal clock and the hour your alarm goes off.\n\nLight is the master switch\n\nThe single most powerful lever you have over that clock is light. As reviews of the field set out, including a 2019 overview by Christine Blume and colleagues, the circadian pacemaker in the brain is reset each day by light reaching the retina, and the timing of that light moves the clock in predictable directions. Bright light in the morning tends to advance it, nudging you to feel sleepy earlier at night and to wake earlier and more alert. Bright light late in the evening does the reverse, pushing your clock later.\n\nSo the practical route to earlier, fresher mornings runs through light rather than willpower. Flood your morning with it: get outside soon after waking, or at least sit by a bright window, since daylight is far stronger than indoor lighting. Then dim the evening, cutting bright screens and overhead lights in the hour or two before bed. You are not disciplining yourself into being a morning person. You are quietly retiming the clock that decides when you feel alert.\n\nThe unglamorous things that actually refresh you\n\nFeeling refreshed on waking comes from a few dull habits done consistently, and consistency is the operative word. The first is regularity: going to bed, and above all waking, at roughly the same time every day, weekends included. A lie-in on Saturday and Sunday shifts your clock later, so that Monday morning arrives like a flight from another time zone, which is social jetlag in miniature. A steady wake time is the closest thing there is to a single fix.\n\nThe second is simply enough sleep. No wake-up trick compensates for chronic short sleep, so an earlier alarm only works if it comes with an earlier bedtime rather than stolen hours. The third is to expect a little grogginess and not to panic at it. The foggy, reluctant feeling in the first fifteen to thirty minutes after waking, known as sleep inertia, is normal even after an excellent night, and it passes. Morning light and a bit of movement clear it faster than lying in bed waiting to feel human.\n\nWhat the evidence does and does not settle\n\nA few honest points belong here. Chronotype sets real limits, and shifts toward an earlier schedule work best when they are gradual, moved by fifteen or twenty minutes every few days rather than imposed overnight. For committed night owls, a healthier goal than an unnatural dawn start may simply be a regular schedule with enough sleep at whatever hours their life actually allows, since the harm in social jetlag comes from the mismatch and the shortfall, not from the clock reading late.\n\nOne caveat matters more than the rest. If you consistently sleep long enough and keep sensible habits but still wake unrefreshed and drag through the day, that is worth taking to a doctor rather than to another morning routine, because conditions such as sleep apnoea, thyroid problems, or low iron produce exactly that pattern and need proper treatment, not more willpower. Within those limits, the conclusion is an encouraging one. Waking early and feeling refreshed is achievable for most people, but it is won by cooperating with the body clock, through steady timing, morning light, and enough sleep, rather than by fighting it at five in the morning. And it comes with an honest asterisk: not everyone is built to greet the dawn, and there is nothing wrong with that.",

"body": "Evonetix claims to reimage biology by developing a different approach to gene synthesis - a highly parallel desktop platform to synthesise DNA with better accuracy and scale.\n\nCambridge-based Evonetix, a synthetic biology company that brings semiconductor technology to DNA synthesis, announced on Tuesday, February 7, that it has raised an additional $24M (approximately €22.36M) to bring its total Series B funding round to $54M.\n\nThe round was led by existing investor Foresite Capital. Molten Ventures, Morningside, DCVC, Cambridge Consultants, Civilization Ventures, and Providence also participated in the round.\n\nJim Tananbaum, Founder and CEO at Foresite Capital, says, \"We continue to be impressed by the Evonetix team and technology, and are excited to lead this round to accelerate their commercial strategy and make gene synthesis more accessible.\"\n\n\"Reimagine Biology\"\n\nFounded in 2015 by Matthew Hayes and currently led by CEO Colin McCracken, Evonetix claims to reimage biology by developing a different approach to gene synthesis - a highly parallel desktop platform to synthesise DNA with better accuracy and scale.\n\nThe patented Binary Assembly method developed by Evonetix uses a silicon chip to manage the synthesis of DNA at thousands of separate thermally controlled reaction sites, or \"pixels\", and their assembly into highly accurate long DNA on the chip surface.\n\nThe company says this method accelerates research in the field of synthetic biology by allowing the precise synthesis of thousands of sequences on a single chip to fulfil the need for complicated libraries and the assembly of lengthy DNA in days rather than weeks.\n\nThe Evonetix DNA writer will be a desktop platform that is accessible to all researchers. The company says this third-generation DNA synthesis technology will provide scalable, accurate DNA synthesis.\n\nAccording to the company, it has the potential to revolutionise how this DNA is manufactured and supplied to consumers, boosting research in applications across medicine, biotech, food, agriculture, and data storage.\n\nCapital utilisation\n\nEvonetix says it will use the funds for the commercialisation of its semiconductor chips and to expand the gene assembly capabilities of its proprietary binary assembly technology.\n\nColin McCracken, CEO at Evonetix, says, \"This substantial investment round demonstrates continued confidence in the progress of our technical development and its potential to revolutionise the accessibility of gene synthesis.\"\n\n\"Evonetix is in a very exciting phase, having recently opened our early access programme. This investment will support us as we execute on our commercial strategy to put benchtop gene synthesis in the hands of users,\" adds McCracken.",

"title": "Psychology says adult children can forgive an imperfect parent, but not an unreachable one -- the parent who would rather protect their pride than become the person their child still hoped to trust - Silicon Canals",
"body": "Picture two fathers. On paper, they're almost the same man.\n\nBoth were hard on their kids. Both worked too much, missed things, said the wrong thing at the wrong dinner. Both raised adult children who still carry some of it around.\n\nOne of them is at his grandson's birthday party this weekend. The other hasn't heard from his son in six years and can't work out why.\n\nThe difference was never the parenting. It came down to one conversation, years later -- the one where the grown-up kid finally said, \"That hurt me.\" And what each father chose to protect in that moment.\n\nKids forgive a lot more than parents think\n\nWhen researchers looked at families who'd fallen out and then made up, they found something surprising. The families that reconciled almost never settled the old argument. Nobody agreed on who was right about 1994.\n\nWhat changed was simpler. One person stopped defending themselves and started listening. That's it. That's what most repaired families had in common.\n\nAnd in the families that stayed broken? Therapists who work with them describe one stumbling block that shows up over and over: the parent won't own what their actions did to the kid. Not the actions themselves -- the effect.\n\nRead that again, because it flips the whole thing. Adult children forgive what happened all the time. What they can't get past is a parent who refuses to look at it.\n\nForgiveness is about who's in the room now\n\nHere's the part that explains everything.\n\nWhen you forgive a parent, you're not really forgiving the person from your childhood. That person is gone. You're deciding whether the person sitting across from you today is safe to let back in.\n\nSo the real question was never \"how bad was it back then?\" It's \"who is this parent, right now, when I bring it up?\"\n\nThe imperfect parent who can hear it -- who says I didn't know that then, I do now, and I'm sorry -- has just handed their kid proof that the old danger is over. That's someone you can trust again. Not because they were a good parent, but because they're reachable.\n\nThe unreachable parent does the opposite. Every you're too sensitive, every that's not how it happened, every why are you bringing this up now isn't a defense of the past. It's proof the past is still running. The kid came looking for a person they hoped to trust and found the same wall.\n\nPride doesn't protect the parent from the old charge. It convicts them on the new one.\n\nWhat the pride feels like from inside\n\nNone of this makes the unreachable parent a monster, and the people who work with them are careful to say so.\n\nOne therapist describes that defensiveness as bricks in a wall against the pain of being rejected by your own child. Psychologist Joshua Coleman tells the story of a father named Ralph. Ralph paid for a good school, bought his son a house, set aside money for the grandkids' college. His son had gone quiet anyway. Ralph's response: \"What exactly am I supposed to be sorry for again?\"\n\nFrom inside, that feels like justice. I gave everything. Now I'm supposed to grovel? To a man who measures love in sacrifice, saying sorry feels like admitting the sacrifice didn't count.\n\nBut look at what Coleman told Ralph. You don't have to say you were a bad father. Just say you didn't know then that you hurt him -- and now you do, and you wish you'd done it differently.\n\nThat's the whole bar. Not a confession. Just an acknowledgment that the kid's experience was real. And for a certain kind of pride, even that is too much.\n\nIf you're the parent\n\nSome readers will feel this one. So here's what actually works, and what doesn't.\n\nWhat fails, every time: I'm sorry you felt hurt. Demanding forgiveness right away. Let's just put the past behind us. And any version of but I did so much for you. Adult children read every one of those as a sign nothing has changed.\n\nWhat works: listen without arguing back, even when you'd tell the story differently. Own the effect without defending the intent. And go first. Coleman is blunt about it -- you have more riding on this than the child who walked away, so the first move is yours. Not because you're guilty. Because you're the one who wants back in.\n\nIf you're the child\n\nHere's your permission slip. What you're asking for isn't unreasonable, and your inability to forgive isn't hardness.\n\nYou forgave imperfect a long time ago. You were ready to. What you can't do is trust someone who is still, today, choosing their pride over you. That's not a grudge. It's an accurate read of who's in the room.\n\nTwo fathers, nearly identical on paper.\n\nOne of them said a sentence he found humiliating -- and got a lifetime of birthday parties for it.\n\nThe other kept his pride. He still has it. It's the only thing left in the house.",
