"title": "IDF Unit 8200 Alumni Association uses network to drive Israeli innovation, start-ups",
"body": "Over 1,200 members of Israel's Unit 8200 alumni community are expected to gather for the 8200 Alumni Association's annual conference next month, bringing together entrepreneurs, technology professionals, investors, and business leaders as the organization looks to strengthen connections across one of Israel's largest professional networks.\n\nThe conference, which draws participants from a range of industries, will take place at Tel Aviv University (TAU) and focus on innovation, adapting to new technologies, and navigating a rapidly changing business environment. Most of the participants are expected to come from Israel, with the association also maintaining alumni communities around the world, particularly from the United States.\n\nThe event comes as artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are reshaping the technology sector and forcing companies and professionals to adapt to new realities.\n\nFor Yulia Bassan, CEO of the 8200 Alumni Association, that ability to adapt is one of the community's defining characteristics.\n\n\"What gives our alumni the special edge is that we are all very agile,\" Bassan told The Jerusalem Post. \"We adjust really well to new technologies.\"\n\nAmong the companies and organizations expected to be represented are cybersecurity companies Zafran, Zenity, and Dream, along with Bank Hapoalim, Decart AI, and PlayPerfect. Hi-Tech Zone is a partner of the event.\n\nConference focuses on innovation, navigating change\n\nThe conference will also build on discussions held at last year's gathering, which took place during the war and focused in part on entrepreneurship during challenging times.\n\nThis year, the association hopes to focus on innovation and the ability to navigate change, Bassan said.\n\n\"We want to hear about innovation and living in a fast-paced world but also the ability to adjust to the new reality and navigate it,\" she explained.\n\nThe changing composition of the conference's attendees is also notable. According to Bassan, approximately 30% of participants last year had more than eight years of professional experience, compared with about 50% of this year's registrants.\n\nBringing together former soldiers from Unit 8200\n\nThe association, which brings together former members of Unit 8200, has sought to expand its role beyond simply maintaining connections among former soldiers. Its activities include professional communities, mentoring, and initiatives designed to connect alumni at different stages of their careers.\n\nBassan, who served in 8200 before studying chemical engineering at the Technion and spending more than 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry, joined the association around three and a half years ago.\n\nAt the time, she was on her second maternity leave and was thinking about how she could contribute to Israeli society. She had been following the Russia-Ukraine war closely; the birth of her daughter had also prompted her to think about whether Israeli society was doing enough to promote women.\n\nShe saw an opening in the association's newsletter for the director of its Women2Women program and joined the organization in that role. After working on the program, she was appointed CEO of the association in December.\n\nHer current focus is on using the skills and experience of the alumni community for a broader purpose.\n\n\"Our work is focused on doing good for Israeli society, not necessarily only for those who served in the unit,\" Bassan said. \"We want to leverage the talent for doing good.\"\n\nThe association has developed programs aimed at different groups within its alumni community, including mentoring for people searching for their first job and for those who have lost their jobs and are looking for their next position.\n\nIt also seeks to create opportunities for entrepreneurs and other professionals to connect with one another.\n\n\"We believe in the power of networking, community, and in the fact that good things happen when people come together,\" Bassan said.\n\nConnecting potential start-up founders and CEOs\n\nThat philosophy is particularly relevant to the association's focus on Israel's technology sector. Bassan said the organization hopes to facilitate connections between founders and potential CEOs and chief technical officers (CTO), as well as between companies and investors.\n\n\"We are the Start-Up Nation,\" she said. \"Israeli start-ups are critical to our economy, and I think the 8200 founders are a critical part of that.\"\n\nThe alumni network has already seen companies receive investments from other alumni, others being acquired or merged, Bassan noted.\n\n\"That's the power of this community,\" she said.\n\nThe Post understands that an exclusive side event will be held alongside the conference that will focus on creating additional opportunities for investment and mergers among alumni-founded companies.\n\nThe aim of the event will be to strengthen connections that can help companies grow and contribute to Israel's hi-tech industry and broader economy.\n\nFor Bassan, the value of the network lies both in the professional credentials of its members and in their ability to help one another navigate change.\n\n\"We want to see and understand the best way to adjust to what's new, such as AI, new tech, and new verticals,\" she explained. \"It's all about the change and how fast and how best you can adjust.\"\n\nThe association's role is to ensure that alumni have a community to turn to as they make those adjustments.\n\n\"What makes this community unique is that there's always a way to adjust and adapt, or find someone to support and guide you through the process,\" Bassan said.\n\n\"And our association is there.\"",

"title": "Israel's STEM gender gap starts long before high school",
"body": "High school studies in STEM -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- are one of the main gateways to prestigious positions in the military and the job market and to future economic success. Yet despite widespread recognition of their importance, most students who choose these subjects and remain on the track are boys.\n\nThe data show that the gap is not about ability. Overall eligibility rates for Israel's matriculation certificate, known as the Bagrut, are nearly identical: 76.4% among boys and 76.1% among girls. But when it comes to advanced STEM subjects, the picture changes. Only 15.4% of girls take the highest-level, five-unit mathematics matriculation exam, compared with 19% of boys. In physics, the gap is even wider: 5.7% of girls compared with 12.5% of boys.\n\nAnd even when girls do take five-unit mathematics, most do not choose the \"high-tech\" track, which combines advanced mathematics with higher-level computer science or physics. In 2024, for example, girls accounted for only about 34.5% of students taking the five-unit computer science exam.\n\nBehind those figures is a process that begins long before students choose their high school concentrations. Gender stereotypes, adults' expectations, confidence in one's abilities and fear of failure accumulate over the years, influencing decisions that can later determine access to technological units in the IDF, university programs and the high-tech industry.\n\n'A gap in opportunity'\n\n\"This isn't a gap in ability, but a gap in opportunity,\" said Prof. Irit Sasson, a senior lecturer at the Tel-Hai University of Kiryat Shmona in the Galilee. She noted that results from the international PISA assessments show almost no difference between boys' and girls' performance in science and only a relatively small advantage for boys in mathematics.\n\nDespite that, too few girls choose to pursue those fields. Women account for about 38% of graduates of academic STEM programs worldwide and about 37% in countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The disparity widens further when graduates enter the workforce.\n\nIn Israel during the 2024-25 academic year, women made up about 34% of students in fields associated with high-tech. In 2025, they accounted for about 34% of high-tech employees but only about 28.4% of those working in research and development positions.\n\nThe gap is also evident in the military, where women account for about 40% of personnel in technological roles that do not require an academic degree but only about 14% of those in research and development positions requiring higher education.\n\nA similar pattern can be seen in the IDF's Academic Atuda program, which allows selected recruits to complete university studies before beginning their military service. Women account for just 14% of participants studying exact sciences and engineering.\n\n\"This is a mechanism that could perpetuate economic and social disparities and reduce mobility and access to positions of power and decision-making,\" Sasson said.\n\nShe said the gap results from a combination of personal, social and institutional factors, including gender stereotypes, expectations from families and society, a shortage of female role models and teaching methods and curricula that can explicitly or implicitly convey the message that certain fields are \"masculine.\"\n\n\"Studies conducted in Israel have found that even when abilities are similar, boys and girls make different decisions about advanced academic tracks,\" Sasson said. \"For example, girls assess their abilities in physics as lower and are less likely to associate technological studies with future opportunities in the military and the job market.\"\n\nWhat could change the picture?\n\n\"Collaborative and interactive learning environments that incorporate discussion, active experimentation and opportunities to express ideas, alongside less emphasis on competition, may help increase girls' participation and strengthen their confidence in their scientific abilities,\" Sasson said.\n\n\"Programs aimed at increasing participation in STEM therefore cannot settle for simply increasing exposure to these fields. They must also adapt teaching methods and systematically assess their impact on girls and boys.\"\n\nSasson said efforts should begin at a young age. They should include making science and programming extracurricular programs and advanced classes more accessible to girls, actively encouraging female students and informing parents and teachers about future opportunities.\n\nShe also called for more girls to be invited to screening and selection processes for technological positions in the military, greater exposure to female role models and mentoring programs and, above all, inclusive teaching methods that strengthen students' confidence in their abilities.\n\nThose efforts, she said, should be accompanied by teacher training and systematic monitoring of gender disparities at every stage of the educational and professional pipeline.\n\n'We've been taught that boys are better suited to these fields'\n\nYuval Shulman, who is entering 12th grade at Beit Eliezer High School in Hadera, is pursuing an advanced track combining five-unit mathematics, physics, biology and English.\n\n\"There are still stereotypes surrounding these fields, and I think many girls are simply afraid to enter them, especially because boys are the majority,\" she said. \"I believe any girl can succeed in science if she wants to. You shouldn't be afraid to choose a less conventional path. There's no reason girls shouldn't be there just as much as boys.\"\n\nShulman said she chose the track because she enjoys challenges and is curious to learn and develop.\n\n\"I knew this choice would open doors for me in the future,\" she said. \"My dream is to work at a high-tech company one day, and it was important for me to choose a track that would give me as many options as possible. The studies are challenging, but they give me a great sense of accomplishment and confidence in my abilities.\"\n\nHer classmate, Esti Rabaev, said the path is not easy.\n\n\"The studies require investment, commitment and a lot of time. But for me, it is absolutely worth it,\" she said. \"I feel this choice will broaden my horizons and create many opportunities in the future.\"\n\n\"For years, society has conditioned us to think that boys are better suited to these subjects and to the high-tech world,\" Rabaev added. \"I think more girls need to be exposed to the opportunities available to them through lectures, personal examples and showing them what their future could look like. Girls can succeed in these fields just as much as boys. If you have the determination, the sky's the limit.\"\n\nRuth Shoham, CEO of the Davidson Institute of Science Education, said women account for slightly more than a quarter of employees in development positions in Israel's high-tech industry. Just 11% of Israeli startup CEOs are women, she said, while women-led companies receive only 4.5% of total investment in the sector.\n\n\"In the coming years, Israel will need to increase the size of its combat forces while preserving and even expanding its technological advantage,\" Shoham said. \"That creates an opportunity to expand women's participation in technological professions in the IDF, intelligence, cyber, research and development.\"\n\nExpanding the number of women entering those fields, she said, is \"a strategic move that can increase the pool of human capital on which Israel will depend in the coming decades.\"\n\n'Girls are perfectionists. Boys keep going even after failing'\n\nMeirav Zarbiv, a deputy director-general at the Education Ministry and head of its Innovation and Technology Administration, said the ministry is working to strengthen female students' confidence in their abilities while holding workshops and awareness programs aimed at changing perceptions among teachers and principals.\n\nThe ministry also provides financial incentives to schools that open prestigious \"Bagrut-Tech\" classes, an advanced high school track geared toward technology studies. School principals have been instructed to ensure that girls make up 50% of such classes as a condition for approval.\n\n\"We are also investing efforts to reduce dropout rates among girls as much as possible,\" Zarbiv said. \"Under the procedure, only a principal may approve a student dropping out, after every effort has been made to strengthen and keep her in five-unit studies in the sciences.\"\n\nIn practice, however, that does not always happen. Girls who struggle are often encouraged by the education system to move to less demanding tracks.\n\nZarbiv stressed that the process shaping students' choices does not begin when they select high school concentrations in ninth grade.\n\n\"It starts in kindergarten, with the image that boys belong in the world of Lego and robots and girls with dolls,\" she said. \"It continues at home, in the early grades and in the guidance students receive when choosing high school tracks.\"\n\nThere is another factor, she said.\n\n\"Girls are perfectionists, and if they fail, they say, 'This isn't for me.' Boys will keep going even if they fail three or four times,\" Zarbiv said.\n\nThe result, she said, is that about 33% of students enrolled in five-unit mathematics drop out of the advanced track between 10th and 11th grades. Of those who leave, 78% are girls and 22% are boys.\n\nA survey by the Trump Foundation for Education and the Geocartography Institute supports that assessment. According to the survey, about 9% of girls describe the high-tech matriculation track as difficult, compared with 30% of boys. About 10% of girls say it is \"not suitable for people like me,\" compared with 7% of boys, while 10% of girls describe the track as intimidating or frightening, compared with 8% of boys.\n\nEli Hurvitz, CEO of the Trump Foundation for Education, said the next objective is clear.\n\n\"After female students became equals among equals in five-unit mathematics, the next step is true equality in the high-tech matriculation track -- meaning physics and computer science as well,\" he said.\n\n\"When they are there in equal numbers, the question will shift to the IDF's technological units and the Israeli high-tech industry: Why are women still not equally represented there?\"",

"title": "Jewish watchdog urges NYPD to increase officers in hot spots after synagogue attack",
"body": "A Jewish security watchdog is doubling down on safety measures in the wake of a Friday night attack against worshipers at Manhattan's Central Synagogue, calling on police to identify cutting edge tactics to identify hot spots for potential hate crimes and to place more officers in those areas.\n\nBut Mitchell Silber, CEO of the Community Security Initiative, acknowledged that preventing situations like Friday's is not straightforward.\n\n\"It's difficult, because you're trying to balance being open for the public for worship, and at the same time, keeping our sanctuary safe,\" Silber told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on Sunday.\n\nOn Friday night Larry Montes, 46, was able to make his way into Central Synagogue's main sanctuary before he disrupted the service with antisemitic slurs and was apprehended by a security guard. Silber said he's been in contact with Central Synagogue security leadership about the incident and understood that Montes had not initially raised any red flags when he entered the building.\n\n\"There wasn't something so out of place that it required them to pull him aside, but they noticed him as not someone they were familiar with,\" he said. According to CSI, the synagogue's team was able to quickly defuse the situation anyway due to the training it had received.\n\nIn the wake of the incident, Silber said the CSI is sending a bulletin to synagogues about steps to improve synagogue safety, a copy of which was shown to JTA.\n\nThe CSI has begun discussions with the NYPD about using tools like \"datamining, crime cluster mapping and pre-emptively deploying against hot spots\" in order to prevent hate crimes before they can happen. The CSI coordinates security for Jewish institutions and communities in the New York area, and is jointly funded by the UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council. (70 Faces Media, the parent company of the JTA and New York Jewish Week, receives UJA funding.)\n\nThe CSI bulletin is also encouraging other synagogues to partner with the Community Security Service, another Jewish nonprofit that trains congregants to volunteer as greeters who can provide more personalized discernment of possible threats.\n\n\"Central Synagogue isn't Park East, Park East isn't KJ, KJ isn't Congregation Beth Elohim - they're all so different, and that's why having members of the synagogue trained can really be a force multiplier,\" Silber said, listing some of the city's most prominent congregations.\n\nMan disrupted synagogue service and attacked congregants\n\nIn the incident on Friday night, Montes yelled during the service, disrupting it, and then struck a 63-year-old congregant and headbutted a member of security personnel who was escorting him out.\n\nRabbi Angela Buchdahl, the congregation's senior rabbi, was away for a family event when the incident occurred on Friday, according to The New York Times. But she wrote on Instagram that the security director \"heroically restrained and escorted\" Montes out of the synagogue, which occurred within one minute of him disrupting the service.\n\nMontes has three previous arrests in New York City, each for a robbery between 2019 and 2023, according to police.\n\nHe was arrested at the scene and arraigned in criminal court immediately that night, where, according to police, he was charged with four counts of assault as a hate crime, two counts of assault, criminal mischief as a hate crime, criminal mischief, disruption of a religious service, criminal trespassing as a hate crime, two counts of aggravated harassment and two counts of harassment.\n\nThe District Attorney's office requested bail at $50,000 cash with $150,000 bond and the judge set bail at $10,000 cash with $30,000 bond. Montes' next court date is August 20, according to the DA's office.\n\nThe attack comes as antisemitic hate crimes against Jews in New York City have risen by 8.5% compared to 2025, as of the end of July. Debate has swirled this year over whether North American synagogues need to step up their security in the mold of European congregations in the wake of attacks like the attempted one in West Bloomfield, Michigan, in which a man drove a fireworks-laden truck into a synagogue.\n\nA number of politicians have weighed in to condemn Friday's attack\n\nNew York Sen. Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in the US, wrote, \"When American Jews say they feel unsafe, this is why. Antisemitism is real and it's increasing by the day.\"\n\nSome have ascribed a lack of safety to rhetoric used by the city's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, a longtime Israel critic who turned heads with his recent video panning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Ofir Akunis, consul general of Israel in New York, called the attack \"a direct result of Mayor Mamdani's sustained campaign of incitement\" in a post on X.\n\nMeanwhile, some of Mamdani's Jewish allies have pointed out that a Facebook profile that appears to belong to Montes has shared a number of posts criticizing the mayor.\n\nMamdani wrote that he was \"horrified by the assault\" at the synagogue, and that all New Yorkers \"must be able to observe their religion without fear of violence.\"\n\nMontes' social media posts include sharing a video of a Prager U commentator taking down Israel critics and multiple photos that suggest support for Israel, including a hand shaded with the Puerto Rican flag shaking another hand shaded with the Israeli flag.\n\nHis aunt, who lives in Puerto Rico, told the New York Post that her nephew \"might not have been in his right mind,\" and that he has expressed a desire to become Jewish.\n\n\"I told him he had to be careful with that because those things are sacred, you have to approach them seriously,\" she told The Post in Spanish.\n\nA woman named Michele Anenberg-Poma posted a photo of herself on Instagram with wounds on her lip and arm, and wrote, \"I am the woman who was assaulted last night at Central Synagogue.\"\n\nShe added, \"You will not punch out our Jewish light. You will not stand and cause harm to our eternal light.\"",

"title": "Israeli arrested in Greece for negligent arson after BBQ sparks wildfire",
"body": "Greek authorities announced the arrest of a 35-year-old Israeli national on suspicion of starting a wildfire on the island of Crete, as the country battled a seasonal spurt of deadly blazes.\n\nThe man, who was not named, was accused of lighting a barbecue in a forested area near the town of Rethimno on Crete's northern coast, despite a burn ban being in effect across the island, according to the E-Kathimerini news site.\n\nAccording to Walla, authorities suspect that embers from the barbecue were carried by high winds from the guesthouse where he was staying, sparking the fire.\n\nHe was accused of negligent arson.\n\nFirefighters managed to get the blaze under control after four hours, according to the report.\n\nLast week, the Greek fire service announced that more than 280 people have been arrested in Greece this year so far over fire-related offenses. The figure is down on the previous two years, after the Greek government toughened penalties against those found guilty of starting fires in recent years.\n\nThose responsible for starting fires in Greece now face sentences of up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to 200,000 euros.\n\nAfter largely escaping the heatwave temperatures that blanketed much of Europe earlier this summer, Greece has been hit with several major wildfires since late July, fuelled by unusually strong winds.\n\nThirty-six blazes have broken out over the past day around Greece, the fire department said Sunday, including a pair of blazes Sunday on the island of Salamis that killed two people.\n\nWinds were expected to ease later Sunday. According to the civil protection ministry, no area will be above 3 out of 5 on the national fire risk scale on Monday for the first time in 10 days.",

"body": "An opinion survey released by the Kan public broadcaster shows the parties of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot would each receive 23 seats if the October 27 elections were held now, making them the largest parties in the Knesset, though neither of their respective parliamentary blocs has a clear path to cobbling together a ruling majority.\n\nFollowing Likud and Eisenkot's Yashar party in the poll is B'Yachad with 14 seats, while Yisrael Beytenu, The Democrats and Otzma Yehudit all receive 10 seats.\n\nUnited Torah Judaism picks up eight seats in the poll, one ahead of fellow ultra-Orthodox party Shas, and the majority Arab Hadash-Ta'al and Ra'am parties get six and five seats respectively. Rounding out the field is Religious Zionism with four seats.\n\nThree right-wing parties vying for the support of disaffected coalition voters, along with the hardline Arab nationalist Balad faction, all fail to clear the minimum vote threshold.\n\nTogether, Yashar and allied parties have 57 seats, versus 52 for Netanyahu's coalition and the remaining seats held by Hadash-Ta'al and Ra'am, which aren't formaly aligned with either bloc.\n\nIn Kan's poll from last week, Likud had 24 seats and Yashar 23, while their blocs respectively had 53 and 56 seats.",

"title": "Missing Israeli found dead on side of road in Finland after disappearing during solo cycling trip",
"body": "The body of a 66 year old Israeli citizen from Tel Aviv was found on Sunday by the side of a road in Finland, about a week after contact with him was lost while he was on a solo cycling trip.\n\nAccording to information received from local police, authorities believe he was struck by a passing vehicle.\n\nA search was launched after contact with the Israeli was lost about a week ago.\n\nOn Sunday, local police reported that his body had been found by the side of the road. The exact circumstances of his death are still under investigation, but the initial assessment is that he was struck by a vehicle while cycling.\n\nZAKA is working with Finnish government to return body to Israel\n\nAfter receiving the report, ZAKA's International Unit began working with the Foreign Ministry, the man's family, and local authorities in Finland to arrange the procedures required to release the body and transfer it to Israel.\n\nThe Israeli consul in Helsinki is also working, with assistance from ZAKA, to expedite the release of his body and its transfer to Israel. The deceased, a Tel Aviv resident, is expected to be buried in Safed.\n\nHaim Weingarten, ZAKA's deputy director of operations, said: \"From the moment we received the report, we have been accompanying the family and working with the authorities in Finland to arrange the necessary procedures. We will do everything possible to bring the deceased for burial in Israel as soon as possible and with the proper dignity.\"\n\nZAKA's International Unit said it would continue to work with the relevant authorities in Finland until the procedures are completed and the body is brought to Israel.",
